Richard Pendlebury, Fellow of St John’s College (1847-1902): notes on a climbing tour of the Alps, including the first certain ascent of the Turnerkamp and culminating in an ascent of the Mattherhorn, 17 June – 25 July 1872. The party included Pendlebury, W. M. Pendlebury, C[harles] Taylor, Fellow and later Master of St John’s College (1840-1908) and W[illiam] H[enry] H[oare] Hudson, Fellow of St John’s College (1838-1915), together with guests and friends. One short passage critical of Hudson is marked later for omission and is not found in the printed version (see below).
285x225mm. 11 fos including a title page, paginated 1-11 [wanting 4, perhaps an error in the later foliation]. With a letter from Charles Taylor to Joseph Larmor, 29 July 1908, suggesting possible publication in The Eagle. The notes were eventually published in this journal, vol. 30 (1909), 172-80. Found among Sir Joseph’s papers at his death in 1942 and transferred to the Library.
