MS H.11 f.60v
Appears in manuscript:Manuscript description
A table of affinity, from f.60v of , Isidore of Seville's Etymologiae (Wigmore Priory, Herefordshire, late 12th century). The table illustrates the degrees of relationship between a person and his or her blood relatives in order to make clear the prohibitions on marriage within one鈥檚 own family. The busts at the end of each line indicate the place of hypothetical viewers, allowing them to orientate themselves with respect to all other family members. The haloed figure of Christ at the top represents the creating spirit of God.
